  1. Yup, they're mad as hatters.

    Incidentally, the expression "mad as a hatter" came from the neurological effects of mercury poisoning in hatters who regularly breathed mercury vapor from the chemicals that they used in making felt hats during the 19th century, before modern workplace safety regulations were enacted.

    Mercury-poisoned hatters trembled constantly, drooled, lost their hair, slurred their speech, had impaired eyesight, and in some cases developed hallucinations and other psychotic symptoms.

    They did not, however, become autistic.
